Artist Statement
Recently, I have been painting portraits with free-form shapes superimposed over the figure. Mostly, the faces are derived from the works of classical masters. Just prior to this I had been making purely abstract paintings with geometric shapes.
My earlier paintings were based on sourced imagery of recent and past events, or from the art and decoration of various cultures. I modified and re-imagined these sources and integrated them into a pictorial whole.
Certain of my past works focused on specific narratives, while others were symbolic and allegorical. With current or historical events, my paintings might show people in danger, at risk of displacement, or injury, while my allegorical work may highlight a social concern. Themes arise out of these concerns, or from personal preoccupations: a childhood attachment, a fascination with the life and work of others.
